The Polish Education System

Poland has a well-developed public education system. Schooling is compulsory from age 7 to 18. Ukrainian children are entitled to free education in Polish public schools.

## Types of Classes for Ukrainian Children

### Integration Classes (Oddzialy integracyjne)

Mixed classes of Polish and Ukrainian children with extra language support. Children learn together while receiving targeted help with Polish.

### Preparatory Classes (Oddzialy przygotowawcze)

Dedicated classes for children who do not yet speak Polish. Focused on intensive Polish language learning while covering core subjects.

### Regular Classes

Some children, especially those who already speak Polish or are younger, can be placed directly in regular classes.

## Required Documents

- Passport or ID document for the child

- Certificate from the previous Ukrainian school (if available — not always required)

- Residence documentation (e.g., PESEL number)

## How to Enroll

1. Find the nearest school (szkola podstawowa) using the local council website

2. Contact the school directly or go in person

3. Submit enrollment documents

4. The school will assess the appropriate class placement

## Language Support

Many schools now have Ukrainian-speaking assistants or teachers. Language courses (Polish as a second language) are often available free of charge. Do not worry if your child does not speak Polish yet — schools are experienced with this.

## Adaptation Tips

Give your child time. Learning in a new language is exhausting. Keep home routines stable. Stay in contact with teachers. Many cities also have Ukrainian community groups for mutual support.
